The power of the Web still overwhelms me

On vacation in Puerto Vallarta this past weekend, we stumbled upon a
charter boat on fire. The 40-50 guests jumped into the Banderas Bay
and were rescued by nearby water taxis and private boats.

Of course, my journalism adrenaline kicked in and I took pictures and posted
video on the Transcript's Web site when I returned Wednesday. Within a day, an actual passenger on the boat posted comments and provided additional details that were then incorporated into the story.

I shouldn't be surprised. Last year, we took photos of University of Oklahoma football fans boarding an early-morning charter bus for the Big 12 football game. I posted the photo on the Web and soon got a call from a woman on the bus, thanking us for posting them.

"How in the world did you see them already?" I asked.

The bus driver had a Sprint card that allowed them to access the web on a large television monitor inside the bus.
