The schools were closed, an office colleague already had called to say she couldn’t get out of her snow-bound corner of Clay County, and another coworker (and neighbor) had offered me a ride downtown in her Jeep.

Standing at my kitchen window, I strained to see if any tire tracks marked my now-hidden driveway or if a set of footprints crossed the unshoveled snow above my buried sidewalk.

Washington, D.C., Dec. 25, 2011 — In an unprecedented Christmas Day signing ceremony, President Obama today affixed his signature to an omnibus Congressional bill known as “The Rescue Confinement Act of 2011.”

Both the House and Senate earlier had passed remarkably similar versions of the new law with comfortable majorities made up of Republicans, conservative Blue Dog Democrats and centrist Democrats.

What surprises me most about the many reactions to Tiger Woods’ extramarital activities is that anyone at the end of 2009 is surprised. A wealthy, powerful and very famous man has been caught cheating on his wife.

And …?

The widespread astonishment from veteran journalists as well as fans — But he seemed so squeaky clean! — is like millions of people facing east in the early morning light and exclaiming, “Oh, my gosh! Here comes the sun!”

As you might imagine, I get a fair number of socio-political e-mails here at the office from strangers and acquaintances who aim to inspire, frighten, warn or amuse me. (Half of them, it seems, I end up debunking with a quick check of snopes.com.)

Add to the many office e-mails a fair number of socio-political e-messages at home from friends and relatives, and I think I can safely say I see a lot of this stuff from a broad spectrum of contributors.
