TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A few hours before the 44th president of the United States was sworn in Tuesday, an ABC television reporter was stationed in the outer-outer regions of the Washington Mall, allowing ordinary Americans — with no tickets to anything — to deliver short messages to millions of viewers.

As a camera swept the diverse clumps of people around and behind him, the reporter said, “This is a demographer’s dream.”
