Stephanie SalterWealthy, powerful, famous man betrays wife (We’re shocked!)
By Stephanie Salter What surprises me most about the many reactions to Tiger Woods’ extramarital activities is that anyone at the end of 2009 is surprised. A wealthy, powerful and very famous man has been caught cheating on his wife. And …? The widespread astonishment from veteran journalists as well as fans — But he seemed so squeaky clean! — is like millions of people facing east in the early morning light and exclaiming, “Oh, my gosh! Here comes the sun!”
‘Remember, I am God and can take care of Myself’
By Stephanie Salter As you might imagine, I get a fair number of socio-political e-mails here at the office from strangers and acquaintances who aim to inspire, frighten, warn or amuse me. (Half of them, it seems, I end up debunking with a quick check of snopes.com.) Add to the many office e-mails a fair number of socio-political e-messages at home from friends and relatives, and I think I can safely say I see a lot of this stuff from a broad spectrum of contributors.

Good daycare? Equal pay? No, working gals need tax-free tummy tucks
By Stephanie Salter As a longtime feminist, I am always cheered when I hear some powerful group or individual not associated with women’s equality stand up and decry an example of gender discrimination. (The infrequency of such declarations means I tend to look for my cheer in other venues.) Over the decades, I’m afraid I have learned to be careful when I encounter this sort of unexpected affirmation. What might seem at first glance to be a sisterhood-is-powerful statement often turns out to be exactly the opposite.
When do all these ticked off people with carts get thankful?
By Stephanie Salter Standing in line at one of the few open checkouts, my arms aching from carrying too many groceries in a reusable shopping bag, I looked around and thought about trying to explain the scene to a curious extraterrestrial visitor. “Why does everyone look so unhappy?” the ET would ask, being well-educated in English as well as human facial expressions and body language. “This is a chain supermarket, a couple of nights before Thanksgiving,” I would answer. “No one is ever happy in these places at such a time.”
